MTH 255, Differential geometry I

Note: If this course is being taught this semester, more information can be found at the course home page.

Cross Listed

MTH 164 and MTH 235, or MTH 174

This course is a prerequisite or co-requisite for

MTH 256

This course builds on MTH 164 to describe calculus on curves, and surfaces. It provides useful tools for theoretical physics (in particular relativity theory) and the theory of hydrodynamics. It is also a useful basis for computer graphics. How can you show that NO flat map of the earth can EVER preserve all distances? Take this courseā€¦ ask about Gauss curvature.

Topics covered

Torsion, curvature, the differential geometry of curves and surfaces in 3-space.

MTH 256. This is the mathematics used for general relativity and for computer graphics. It is also used in fluid mechanics.
