The nature and style of mathematics in ancient Babylonia, Egypt, and Greece; medieval and Renaissance Europe; seventeenth century Europe; and some aspects of the development of abstraction and rigor in analysis and set theory since 1700. Some of the actual methods and problems of the eras studied are part of the material of the course.
