We will discuss the recent results concerning the algebraic properties of the Artin-Mazur zeta function in positive characteristic. To do this, we will in- troduce several ideas from number theory, dynamical systems, and theoretical computer science and build bridges between them. In particular, we will in- troduce ideas from automata theory and regular languages and discuss their connections and applications to problems in arithmetic dynamics.
