We will introduce the fundamental ideas behind symbolic dynamics and topological groups, including their relations to Markov shifts and locally compact groups, and discuss applications in dynamics. Furthermore, we will show that second countable-Hausdorff-locally compact-totally disconnected groups under expansive automorphisms are conjugate to countable state Markov shifts.
