I will discuss a prototypical model in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, the directed polymer in a random environment. The goal is to understand how the random environment affects the behavior of the polymer paths and how some magical exponents show up in 1+1 dimension. I will focus on the so-called endpoint distribution and discuss an infinite system of partial differential equations related to it. This is a joint work with Chris Henderson
