We recently introduced a notion of a `nearly toric variety’. These algebraic varieties share many properties with toric varieties but come with added combinatorial complexity. We encountered these geometric objects while studying homogeneous fiber bundles on Schubert varieties, and we believe they are prevalent in various mathematical contexts. In our talk, we will discuss the origins and significance of nearly toric varieties in our work, provide characterizations, and present open problems and conjectures for future research.
