Solar eclipses: why they happen when they do.

Over 2000 years ago Babylonian astronomers noticed that eclipses, both solar and lunar, tend to repeat themselves every 18 years.

Edmund Halley called this this Saros cycle. I will explain this phenomenon with lots of anecdotes along the way, including an account of how I became a solar eclipse fanatic while in graduate school.
