Shift space, which is constructed in a full shift space by avoiding the appearance of forbidden blocks, is a basic and important concept in symbolic dynamics. In this talk, we will discuss the relationship between graph, square matrix with nonnegative coefficient, and shift space of finite type. We will construct the edge shift and vertex shift intuitively from a graph and matrix, and then discuss why conversely it cannot be done directly.
