In the 1970s, Dwork, and later his student Adolphson, attempted to give a p-adic cohomological description of Hecke polynomials. In this talk, we will describe how to reinterpret their work in terms of weakly holomorphic modular forms. If time permits, we will discuss the role played by the Tate-Deligne mapping.
