The Ore conjecture (now a theorem) asserts that the equation \(xyx^{-1} y^{-1} = g\) can be solved for x and y in any finite simple group G for any fixed g in G. This typifies the equations in the title. I will discuss what is known and what remains open when it comes to solving equations in the limit as G becomes large.
