I will discuss how properties of Anick spaces were originally conceived to try to understand why certain spectra are commutatitive ring spectra, and I will outline how these properties were eventually proved. I will discuss the open case of V(1).

There will also be a pretalk in the same room from 12:45pm to 1:45pm.
