Discovery of classic Pi formula a “cunning piece of magic”

Mathematicians are accustomed to seeing π in a variety of fields. But professor Tamar Friedmann was still surprised to find it lurking in a formula for energy states of the hydrogen atom.

The Annals of Mathematics has accepted for publication the paper “On the non-existence of elements of Kervaire invariant one”, co-authored by professor Doug Ravenel.

WeBWorK is an open-source online homework system developed in the UR Math Department by Profs. Mike Gage and Arnold Pizer. They received the 2016 AMS award for Impact on the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics. WeBWorK is now used at over 700 colleges and universities around the world.
