Syllabus for Math 436, Fall 2010

       2) Abstract Algebra by Dummit and Foote (3rd ed)

In the first semester, we will cover Chapters 1 - 6 of Ash's book, accompanied by corresponding sections of Dummit and Foote. Our goal will be to gain fluency in the foundations of algebra: groups, rings, fields, and modules. We will finish with Galois theory.

II. Grading
Your grade will be determined by
 - One midterm (20%)
 - One final exam (40%)
 - Participation (10%)
 - Weekly assignments (30%)

Exam dates:
 - Midterm on Thursday, Oct 26 in room TBA from TBA 
 - Final Exam on Sunday, Dec 19, at 12:30 in room TBA

General Grading scheme:
  A >= 90%
  B >= 80%
  C >= 70%

III. Homework & Latex
Homework is due every Thursday, either in class or my mailbox. Of the assigned problems you are to type one of the problems into Latex and hand in the printed (compiled) version. Let me know if you need any help in preparing your first few latex documents. While you may work together on homework problems, the work you hand in must be in your own words.

IV. Late Assignments
In general, late work is not accepted. If there is a future conflict please speak to the instructor as soon as possible before the conflict to make appropriate arrangements.
