Description
This course is an introduction to the language and problems of mathematics. The precise topics vary from year to year, but the emphasis is always on increasing the student’s “mathematical sophistication” and ability to read and write proofs. If you would like a more gentle introduction to proofs compared with Math 235, consider MTH200W. Students taking the MTH 171 - 174 sequence will note usually not take this course. Students that have already completed Math 235 or 172 need permission before taking this course.
Topics covered
Introduces some of the basic techniques and methods of proof used in mathematics and computer science. Methods of logical reasoning, mathematical induction, relations, functions, and more. These methods are discussed in the context of specific mathematical problems and theories.
