The Mandelbrot set is one of the most fascinating and mysterious fractal sets. In the 1980s, Douady and Hubbard showed how the topological structure of this set endoces central aspects of the dynamics of quadratic polynomials. In spite of much progress, some of the central problems remain open. This basic introductory talk, is the first of a study group about the Mandelbrot set.
