In 1920, Fatou conjectured, in some form, that hyperbolic maps are open and dense among all rational maps. This conjecture is one of the main open problems in the dynamics of iteration of rational maps. In this talk, we will cover the main idea behind the proofs of Graczyk and Swiatek and of Lyubich of this conjecture in the case of real quadratic maps.
