UR Finances 101: Frequently asked questions
WORK IN PROGRESS

What does the central administration do
and where does it get its money?

The central administration is responsible for managing the university as a whole.  It has no major direct source of revenue, but a few minor ones such as gifts in support of presidential ventures and undesignated bequests to the university.

The schools and divisions are charged for the services provided by the central administration (this is called “cost allocation”) using various metrics having to do with the costs of those services.

The functions of the central administration include

·         setting  priorities and strategic goals for the university

·         representing the university to the wider community

·         coordination of fund-raising activities

·         managing the university’s endowment

·         review of school budgets

·         overseeing nonacademic functions such as maintenance, security, information technology, parking, heating/cooling, benefits and payroll

·         setting benefits policies and pay scales for nonacademic staff
